Renowned for it's volcanic terrain, magnificent glaciers and miraculous geothermal pools, Iceland has experienced a large increase in visitors in recent years as more and more people seek the untouched beauty that the north Atlantic island has to offer.  Reykjavik, the capital, is regarded as the cultural centre of the island, with the National Cathedral, the National Museum, and the historical Old City amongst the sights that attract visitors.  Akureyri is also popular, with the sulphur fields and thermal pools in close proximity, as is Husavik, one of the best places to whale watch. The Thingvellir National Park (where the fissure between the North American and European plates is slowly widening), Gulfoss (Golden Falls), and geothermal Blue Lagoon are all must see locations.  Fortunately many of the main towns and tourist spots are connected by the Ring Road, making it easy to navigate the island.

Iceland is serviced by two main airports, the Keflavik International Airport (fifty kilometres away from Reykjavik near the town of Keflavik) and the much smaller mainly domestic Reykjavik Airport, located near the city centre.  Keflavik International has two runways and is visited by a number of international airlines including Icelandair and Iceland Express, who both fly routes to and from British airports (London, Glasgow and Manchester).  As Keflavik International is located a fair distance from Iceland's capital city, and the taxi service can be quite expensive, it is often easier to simply hire a car.  Avis, Budget, National and Hertz all have offices at Keflavik Airport.
